Doing It All At Once: Your Guide To Exterior Remodeling

remodeling Doing It All At Once: Your Guide To Exterior RemodelingRemodeling the exterior of your home is something that you may only do once or twice in your entire life.  When you decide to have the work done, then you need to have the best contractor available for the project, because this is not a place where you want to try to cut corners or have cheap work done.  It is a good idea to have all of the exterior remodel done at one time so that you can reduce the amount of inconvenience and get discounts on the materials and labor used during the project.  During the remodeling process, you will need to work through several areas of the exterior so that you get all of the work done that you need.

The first place that you should start with your exterior remodel is the siding.  Because the siding makes up so much of the exterior, other decisions about color and style are all dependent on the choices that you make with your siding.  You will want siding that is made with high quality materials, such as fiber cement siding, and you will want colors that can be easily matched.  A color scheme that works from siding, to trim and roofing will create a home that is more warm and inviting.  The home will have more curb appeal, and in the event that you want to sell the home, you will be able to get a better price.

The next step is to consider the type of roofing that you want to have.  There are several different roofing options, including asphalt, wood and metal.  Asphalt shingles are some of the cheapest to put up, but they are also the most susceptible to damage in extreme weather conditions.  Wooden shingles are a little more costly, but they can be a magnet for algae and moisture.  Metal roofing will cost you more money in the beginning, but the roof with last a very long time.  The roof must be sealed tight against the structure of the home, so that water and moisture does not enter the home and cause damage.  Do not trust a contractor who does not have specific roofing experience, or you may be surprised the first major storm that you see.

One of the things that you are likely to forget about when you are in the process of remodeling your home’s exterior is the gutter system.  The gutters are not very glamorous, but they are one of the most important lines of defense that your home has against water.  When the rain falls on the roof, the gutters direct the water from the roof and onto the ground.  They keep water from the eaves and weak points of the home.  With gutter shields, you can ensure that the gutters are kept clear of debris and the water will continue to run smoothly through the system for years to come.  A good gutter system will also have a drain point that is far enough away from the landscaping and the foundation so that the water does not pool in the lawn.

Each part of an exterior remodel is important, and you want the very best for your home when the project is completed.  With the right contractor, you will have a job that is done quickly and on budget, and a project that you can be proud of.

I am Kevin Stoli, and last year I had a home exterior remodel completed.  During the process I learned a lot about the different pieces of the home’s exterior and I wrote this article to talk about some of the things that you need to think about for your remodel.  I used Eby Exteriors ( for the remodel and I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking to have siding Lancaster PA done on their home.
